FLORIDIANS UNITE TO FORM A SANCTUARY COMMUNITY
Residents Seek End to ICE Violence and Intimidation
The killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti marked a breaking point. As Florida residents, we are horrified by the escalating use of masked federal agents who descend on towns across our country, seize unsuspecting people from streets and workplaces, force them into unmarked vehicles, and disappear them into jails and detention centers—often without charges or due process. These police-state tactics, now accompanied by deadly violence, shatter public trust and threaten the safety of our communities. They are made even more dangerous when state and local leaders allow, excuse, or enable this terror.
We refuse to be silent.
We now step forward to protect our neighbors—and ourselves—by forming a statewide Florida Sanctuary Community. Sanctuary is an ancient and sacred principle: when people are unjustly targeted, communities of conscience step up to help them. We commit to creating networks of care and protection, easing suffering, and affirming that fairness, dignity, and human rights belong to everyone—especially the most vulnerable among us.
ICE raids on workplaces and homes; assaults on elders; the handcuffing of children; and the detention of legal residents and U.S. citizens are acts of cruelty that traumatize families and destabilize entire communities. These practices do not make us safer. They spread fear. They violate basic human decency. Faith leaders, civil rights organizations, and physicians and educators across the nation have condemned these actions and demanded an end to policies that assault human dignity.
When elected officials lack the courage to act, the people must.
As Floridians of many faiths, backgrounds, and political beliefs, we pledge to offer lawful, nonviolent support to our neighbors and to the strangers among us. We will:
Observe, document, and record ICE raids and abuses
Report misconduct to local authorities and state and national media
Testify in court about ICE brutality, when called upon
Partner with houses of worship and community members to protect those at risk
We do this not in defiance of the law, but in defense of justice.
United by conscience, we affirm democratic values and reject the normalization of abduction, intimidation, and terror carried out in our name by federal agents.
Renee Good and Alex Pretti can no longer speak for themselves.
We can—and we will.
